As of 2025, the Cyprus passport offers substantial travel freedom, with its global ranking varying slightly across different indexes
- Henley Passport Index:Ranked 14th, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 178 destinations
- VisaIndex: Positioned at 15th, with access to 176 destinations
- Passport Index: Holds the 9th spot, offering a mobility score of 171, which includes visa-free access to 121 countries, visa-on-arrival to 44, and electronic travel authorization (eTA) to 6
- These rankings reflect Cyprus’s strong global mobility, especially within the European Union, the Schengen Area, and several other regions
Pathways to Cypriot Citizenship
Cyprus provides multiple avenues for acquiring citizenship:
1. Citizenship by Descent
- Eligibility Individuals born abroad with at least one Cypriot parent are eligible.
- Requirements Applicants must provide authenticated documents, including birth certificates and proof of the Cypriot parent’s citizenship
2. Citizenship by Marriage
- Eligibility Spouses of Cypriot citizens can appl.
- Requirements The couple must have been married for at least three years and have cohabited in Cyprus for a minimum of two years before the application
3. Citizenship by Naturalization
- Eligibility Foreign nationals who have legally resided in Cyprus for *seven consecutive years.
- Requirements Applicants must have a clean criminal record, knowledge of the Greek language, and demonstrate integration into Cypriot society
4. Permanent Residency Leading to Citizenship
- Fast-Track Residency Investors can obtain permanent residency by purchasing property in Cyprus worth at least €300,000 and maintaining a fixed deposit of €30,000 in a Cypriot bank for three year.
- Path to Citizenship After seven years of legal residency, individuals may apply for citizenship, provided they meet the necessary criteria
5. Former Citizenship by Investment Program
- Note Cyprus previously offered citizenship through significant financial investment. However, this program was abolished in 2020 due to concerns over its implementation
